The Shiba Inu is an adorable looking dog. The Reds look like little foxes while the Sesame and the Black & Tans are equally as beautiful. Many times people purchase these dogs because of their sensational appearance without researching their temperment. As a result, these dogs are often not the perfect match for the owner, and the owner surrenders them to a shelter.

Before purchasing a Shiba, it is essential to understand the breed. Shiba’s are strong-willed, athletic, and the smallest of the Japanese hunting dog. Consequently, obedience training is suggested to optimize their intelligence and performance, as well as either a high fenced-in yard or always maintaining on a leash when outdoors.

Book references will indicate that if a Shiba gets free (they are known as the "great escape artists") they know their way home, but they may encounter a fatal mishap as they tear after small game without regard for their own safety.

Shibas love to play. They also love to run, to trek, and to explore. They are extraordinarily intelligent and rarely have to be taught something more than once.

The Jindo is a Korean dog that appeared in the United States in the l980's. It is not an accepted American Kennel Club breed and it is often unknown and little understood.

The Jindo is larger than the Shiba, but smaller than the Akita. The average female ranges from 35 - 45 pounds. The male ranges from
40 - 55 pounds.

The Jindo is loyal, a bit less domesticated, yet obedient with a firm, consistent, and loving owner. The Jindo is also a hunter, so the owner must be cautious about keeping this dog on a leash or in a fenced-in yard. The Jindo will run after game.

Features on the Jindo are less refined than those of the Shiba, but they make a dymanic presence with their curled-up tail and sturdy body.

The site was indended as a rescue site for the purebred Shiba. I dearly love this breed, and I want those that have a Shiba to experience the same love and joy that I do.

Nonetheless, it has become obvious from working with animal shelters that there are also mixed breed dogs that are part Shiba and often part Jindo, part Chow Chow, part Sharpei, and even part Huskey. In an effort to rescue these dogs as well, you may see mixed breed dogs with only some Shiba also available on this site.
